The festive season has been well and truly brought to life at Larks Leas Retirement Home, with residents and staff coming together to enjoy a wonderfully creative, home-produced mini pantomime that filled the home with laughter, music and Christmas cheer.
As a much-loved residential care home in Dorset, Larks Leas is always looking for meaningful and enjoyable ways to bring residents together, and this year’s festive performance proved to be a huge success.
A Pantomime with a Larks Leas Twist
The story followed the adventures of Beckerella, played by our very own manager, who is worn out from the pressures of Christmas cleaning, shopping and cooking. Her troubles multiply when she is asked to help her three “ugly sisters” – Germolene, Listerine and Vaseline – prepare for a grand Royal Ball. With wardrobe mishaps, mixed-up laundry and plenty of comic chaos, Beckerella certainly had her hands full.
Scene two introduced a fairy godmother with a difference, complete with a pet parrot named Peregrine. Feeling a little glum due to the lack of ringing care bells, the fairy godmother was delighted to help Beckerella. With a wave of her wand, a cucumber transformed into a mini car, Peregrine became a flying horse, and Beckerella was ready for the Ball in a conjured little black dress.
Laughter, Music and Audience Participation
In scene three, King Charles and Camilla made an appearance, setting the tone with their royal entrance and adding to the humour with topical references that delighted both residents and staff. The cast then burst into song with “Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better”, encouraging residents to join in with their own lines and playful competition.
As expected in any good pantomime, residents enthusiastically called out “Oh no you’re not!” and “She’s behind you!”, creating a lively atmosphere full of cheering and smiles.
A Happy Ending for All
The narrator delivered a joyful conclusion – no lost shoes and no love matches, but a surprise job offer for Beckerella, who was invited to become manager of Buckingham Palace. Best of all, all residents were, of course, welcome to join her.
Celebrating Community and Care
This festive event perfectly reflects the warm, inclusive spirit of Larks Leas, a trusted care home in Blandford offering high-quality support, companionship and enrichment. As an established elderly care home, moments like these highlight the importance of creativity and shared experiences in later life.
A heartfelt thank you goes to all staff who took part, those who helped organise the room, residents and refreshments, and to Richard – a very willing husband – for his unforgettable role as an ugly sister. We are also grateful to The Ansty Pantomime for kindly lending their wonderful costumes.
At Larks Leas, a welcoming retirement home in Blandford, we believe that joy, laughter and community are just as important as care – and this festive pantomime was a perfect reminder of that.
